Session 1 – Identifying, Processing and Closing a Real Estate-Funded Life-Income Gift

This presentation offers a comprehensive overview of the key considerations involved in identifying, structuring, and successfully closing real estate–funded life income gifts. Participants will explore best practices for partnering effectively with philanthropy staff to identify prospective opportunities, qualify and cultivate donors, and spot potential issues early in the process. The session will also address the importance of strong gift acceptance policies, strategies for collaborating with internal and external real estate professionals, and how to evaluate and determine the most appropriate gift vehicle. Attendees will gain insight into the gift negotiation process as well as critical post closing considerations to ensure strong stewardship and long term success for both the donor and the organization.

Session 2 – Planned Giving and Beyond: Maximizing Noncash Donor Strategies in Today’s Environment

With wealth transfer projections continuing to rise - currently projected at $124T with $18T going directly to charitable organizations - noncash giving strategies have become a must in nonprofits' fundraising plans. Planned giving is a big piece of that puzzle. This session will dive into crucial trends and opportunities in noncash giving strategies employed by our private client base.

Topics will include:

  • How the markets are affecting the philanthropic landscape
  • Which noncash vehicles are on the rise and which to focus on within your fundraising plan
  • How should the above be considered when discussing legacy planning amidst the wealth transfer and next gen donors

Session 1 Speaker

Bill Strickland, J.D., C.S.P.G, serves as a Senior Executive Director, Planned Giving with City of Hope. In that role, he cultivates, stewards and solicits planned giving donors and prospects. In addition, he serves as a philanthropic resource for professional advisors, enabling them to deepen and add value to their entertainment and sports-related, client relationships. Bill has a proven donor-centric fundraising background in addition to his experience in philanthropic consulting, fiduciary services, and business litigation.

Before joining City of Hope, William served as the Planned Giving Officer for the California Community Foundation where he led Planned Giving and Sartori Circle (Legacy Society) programs and partnered with business managers, CPAs, entertainment industry advisors and nonprofit organizations. He also served as the Associate Director of Planned Giving with The Nature Conservancy for 8 years after leaving Bank of America's Trust Services Center, where he served as Vice President and Trust Officer. In that role, he administered trust and investment management accounts, providing technical fiduciary expertise. Having obtained a JD from the University of California, Davis, William served as a litigation attorney for Bergman & Wedner for 3 years. Also, William served on the board of the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners and as a past president of the Partnership of Philanthropic Planning of Greater Los Angeles (now named, Southern California Chapter of Charitable Gift Planners). William is a former CEPA.

Session 2 Speakers

Erica Doyle is a Vice President and Director on the Foundation and Institutional Advisory (FIA) team at Bernstein Private Wealth Management. She works out of the Los Angeles office, partnering with wealth advisors throughout the Western Region to support and add structure to their servicing of clients across the philanthropic spectrum. The FIA team works closely with Berntein's tax-exempt clients to deliver a tailored suite of services designed to meet their specific needs, adding value beyond portfolio returns. Erica came to Bernstein in January 2025 after 15 years in the social sector, most recently serving as Senior Director of Corporate Philanthropy at Year Up United, a national nonprofit in the workforce development space. Prior to that, Erica was Managing Director of the just keep livin Foundation, Matthew McConaughey's charitable foundation. Her additional experience includes roles at cancer research and treatment institution, City of Hope, and positions in the entertainment industry at such companies as Universal Pictures and Creative Artists Agency (CAA). She graduated with a BA in History from Northwestern University.

Katie Gardner is a Vice President and Director of the Institute for Trust and Estate Planning at Bernstein Private Wealth Management, sitting in the San Francisco Office. Before joining Bernstein in 2024, Katie was an estate planning associate at Coblentz Patch Duffy & Bass LLP and at Loeb & Loeb LLP, where she focused on sophisticated tax and estate planning techniques for high-net-worth families. Prior to developing an expertise in estate planning, Katie spent two years practicing employee benefits and tax law at Hanson Bridgett LLP. Katie earned her BA in developmental psychology from Stanford University, where she received the J.E. Wallace Sterling Award for Scholastic Achievement. Katie earned her JD from Stanford Law School, where she contributed to the Stanford Law & Policy Review journal and volunteered for the Stanford Tax Pro Bono Project.

SoCalCGP regrets that refunds will not be given for no-shows. A refund of full registration is permitted prior to an event by submitting a written request to [email protected]. 

SoCalCGP reserves the right to change speakers and/or cancel an event due to unforeseen circumstances without penalty. The total amount of any liability of SoCalCGP will be limited to a refund of the attendee’s registration fee.

Continuing Education

SoCalCGP is approved as continuing education provider #3889 of MCLE credit by the State Bar of California and designated this activity for a maximum of 2.0 hours of credit.

SoCalGP is also approved for CFRE continuing education credits. Full participation in the education session is applicable for 2.0 points in Category 1.B – Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or recertification.

Certified Specialist in Planned Giving (CSPG) continuing education credits for Planned Giving are self-reported and the appropriate attendance certificate will be provided after the event.

An application for continuing education credits for CFP® is submitted when the course content is within the CFP® Board guidelines.

Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits for CPAs through the California Board of Accountancy are self-reported and it is the obligation of each licensee to select a course of study consistent with CBA requirements.
